This is a discussion driven course, students will be required to participate and lead discussions.
A. Reading: Read the assigned sections BEFORE we begin covering the material so that you will be able to participate in classroom discussion.
B. Examinations: There will be three exams during the semester. Questions for the exams will be drawn from classroom discussions, your textbooks, and assignments.
C. Quizzes: there will be 9 quizzes worth 20 points each. Your lowest score will be dropped. You CANNOT MAKE UP Quizzes. Questions for the quizzes will be drawn from classroom discussions, your textbooks, and assignments.
D. OT Parallels:. You should chose one of the assigned readings from the Matthews. This essay should be a 3-4 page examination of the reading you should read summarize the discovery of the test (who found it, when was it found, where was it found). Then analyze the significance of the text and how it relates to a particular passage in the Old Testament.
E. VKRP Website: Visit www.vkrp.org examine the site and become familiar with it. Write a 3-4 page essay which analyzes at least one archaeological technique, and at least two case studies related chronologically to our class.
F. Museum Display: The Huntington Museum of Art, has a special exhibit entitled “Mummy” the cost of the exhibit is $3.00. It has a mummy from an Atlanta museum and 20 artifacts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Those of you at the B level should plan to visit this display on your own and bring back proof of your visit. Those of you at the A level must write 2-3 page essay explaining the exhibit. You should describe 4 of the objects in detail and relate the materials in the exhibit to Old Testament studies.
G. Research Paper:
The major assignment for students at the A level is a research paper on an archaeological site appropriate for this course. The instructor must approve all paper topics. Only one person may work on any topic.
1. First Draft of your paper, this is to be a complete paper, typed and of the assigned length with Bibliography. This first draft will be exchanged with two other classmates who will read it and make editorial comments. Then you will rewrite this draft into your final paper. The students who read your paper will sign their names to indicate that they have reviewed your work.
2. Final Paper, you must attach the first draft to your final paper. Failing to turn in a first draft or turning in an incomplete first draft will result in the reduction of your paper grade by 10%. Your paper is to NO LESS than 8 pages of text in length and no more than 10 pages (excluding bibliography, pictures, graphs, tables, etc.). You are to follow standard MLA form and style. This assignment should be printed on white paper in 12 point type, ONE INCH MARGINS, and Double spaced (MLA FORMAT). Be sure to write in complete sentences and use proper grammar and style. You must use at least 2 periodical articles, 2 standard reference works, and 2 books besides your textbooks. You must use at least one and no more than 2 Internet/CD/computer based resource.
Your research paper must be original for this course, that means you cannot reuse a paper from another course or combined this paper with a paper from another course.
Yourpaper on an archaeological site should follow the guidelines listed below. Use reference and overview books to get started, then branch out to develop a working bibliography. Include endnotes or footnotes and a bibliography of works consulted. You may have to get books or articles via interlibrary loan so do not loose time. You can propose any site you want but you do need prior approval of the instructor. Do not forget to contact me about this as soon as possible! The paper should have the following structure:
1) general description of the site, including geographical and historical setting 2) who excavated the site and when? 3) chronology of the architectural remains 4) description of the most important building and its context 5) general description of the pottery 6) general description of one other type of artifacts: coins, figurines, metal tools, beads, reliefs, ... 7) biblical references to the site (if any) 8) bibliography 9) illustrations (photocopies are acceptable):
- plan of the site - plan of the most important building - one drawing of a typical pot; the drawing needs to be of this type (3/4 view): - one drawing of a representative example of the other type of artifacts described
